Introduction to ‘Compendium of States or Phenomena (Dhammasanganī)’
Date: 1st May (Monday)
Time: 7 PM - 8.30 PM (UK Time)
Zoom ID: 9204160619

The "Dhammasangani" is the opening book of Abhidhamma Pitaka. It starts with a "Matika" which is a list of classifications of Dhammas, which can be translated as nature, ideas, phenomena, states or patterns. According to the Abhidhamma method, there are 22 three-fold classifications and 100 two-fold classifications, and 42 classifications according to the Sutta(discourses). The main content of the book is divided into four sections:

  1. The first section deals with the states of mind and lists and defines the factors present in them.

  2. The second section covers material phenomena and classifies them numerically, such as single, double, etc.

  3. The third section applies the material covered in the first two sections to explain the classifications in the Matika.

  4. The fourth section does the same, but in a different, and sometimes more detailed way, and omits the Sutta (discourses) method 2-fold classifications.

The Dhammasangani provides a detailed and systematic understanding of the nature of reality and the workings of the mind through its comprehensive classification of Dhammas and its explanation of how different states of mind and physical phenomena are interconnected.
