A Sanctuary for
Vipassana Meditation

The building at 175 Maldon Road, Colchester, CO3 3BL, has been a significant landmark to the Colchester community for nearly a century. Its cornerstone was laid on May 22, 1924, bearing a Hebrew inscription from Psalm 118:22: “The stone which the builders rejected has become the head of the corner.” This profound message symbolises transformation and renewal—themes that resonate deeply with the building’s evolving story.

We are deeply honored that the Trustees of the New Church have chosen the Dhamma Centre as the most suitable custodians of this historic property. The secretary of the New Church remarked, “We are confident that the Dhamma Centre will love this property and look after it well.” Embracing this responsibility with gratitude, we are committed to preserving the legacy of this cherished landmark and nurturing it for future generations as an oasis of peace and tranquility.

For almost 100 years, this site was home to the New Church and part of the property operated as a school for children. However, in recent years, the congregation experienced a decline in attendance, with many members choosing to join meetings online. Facing these changes, the trustees sought to sell the property and even submitted plans to demolish the historic building to make way for new homes. Following the public’s strong objection, these plans were rejected by Colchester Council.

Upcoming move to our new home…

We are thrilled to share that the Dharma Centre is in the final stages of purchasing new premises. This space will become a beacon for our community, offering a serene environment for learning, meditation, and growth.

What is Vipassana

What’s happening right now…

While our legal team is finalizing the transfer of deeds, we are actively fundraising for the renovation costs required for essential remedial work.

We are grateful to the dedicated volunteers from our community who have been working hard to prepare detailed specification plans. These plans will allow us to gather quotes from builders and specialists for the renovation work.

The immediate tasks include improving insulation, upgrading the bathrooms, creating living quarters for monks, and maintaining the garden.

We eagerly look forward to the day we can announce the opening of our new Centre. In the meantime, we hope you will consider supporting our mission.

We would appreciate any donations to support the renovation of the property.
